A Summer in Rome

A Message from the Master sermon series

July 6 – August 31, 2008

Summer is the time of year when many families go on vacation, but God never wants us to take a vacation from his Word. Summer is a good time to recharge our spiritual batteries, a time for our faith to be refreshed and renewed. To help us to do that we will devote our summer sermon series to a study of Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Why study Romans? Luther says it best: “This epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament, and is truly the purest gospel.  It is worthy that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but also that he should occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul.  We can never read it or ponder over it too much; for the more we deal with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes.”

Justification   MP3  WMA  Text

July 6 – Daron Lindeman

Romans 3:21-28

Every tour has to begin somewhere, and our study of Romans begins with the Bible’s most important (and perhaps most comforting) teaching: the doctrine of justification by grace through faith.

A History Lesson   MP3  WMA  Text

July 13 – Pastor Rolfe Westendorf

Romans 4:18-25

Just as Rome is a city with a rich history, Romans uses examples from Bible history to convey God’s truth.  In this lesson Paul points to the Old Testament patriarch Abraham as a man who was saved by faith…just like we are.

Peace, Hope & Joy   MP3  WMA  Text

July 20 – Pastor Steven Pagels

Romans 5:1-11

This letter was written during the Pax Romana, a period of peace and prosperity throughout the Roman Empire.  While peace on earth is a blessing, it doesn’t last, unlike the peace with God believers enjoy through Jesus.

Conflict Resolution   MP3  WMA  Text

July 27 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Romans 7:15-25a

It isn’t unusual for siblings to fight with each other on vacation, but there is a much more serious battle that is being waged inside each one of us (the struggle between the Old Adam and the New Man), a spiritual conflict that can only be resolved at the cross.

Anticipation   MP3  WMA  Text

August 3 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Romans 8:18-25

Sometimes the anticipation of what we will see and do on vacation ends in disappointment, but the Lord guarantees that Christians will not be disappointed when the anticipation of future glory becomes reality in heaven.

Holy Groans

August 10 – Mueller

Romans 8:26, 27

Parents can become frustrated when their kids grumble and complain on vacation, but we need to remember that not all groaning is bad, especially when it is the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

Protection & Election

August 17 – Lindemann

Romans 8:28-30

Travel companies strongly urge vacationers to take steps to protect themselves and their valuables.  Paul turns similar advice into a promise when he reminds us that the Lord will always take care of his chosen people.

Security

August 24 – Bivens

Romans 8:35-39

One of the greatest fears of parents on vacation is that they will somehow get separated from their children.  Even though that can and does happen, these words assure us that nothing can separate God’s children from their heavenly Father.  Those who rest secure in God’s love have nothing to fear.

Doxology

August 31 – Pagels

Romans 11:33-36

Just as the Lord’s Prayer ends with a doxology, our tour of Romans ends with a song of praise.  We give honor and glory to our triune God, whose divine wisdom is surpassed only by his unending grace and mercy.

The Lord Provides

A Message from the Master sermon series

April 6 – May 18, 2008

Series Overview: PDF

“The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7,8). Children of God take comfort in the Lord’s providence, because it means everything – absolutely everything – is going to be okay. Nothing can separate us from his loving care. This sermon series rejoices that “The Lord Provides” by highlighting some of his special activities and some of our special blessings.

The Lord Provides   MP3  WMA  Text

April 6 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Deuteronomy 8:1-9

Moses reminds the Israelites of the Lord’s providence. As he provided them with manna he gives us our daily bread. As he humbled and tested them to love and trust him more he dispenses earthly blessings to us for spiritual growth.

The Lord Protects   MP3  WMA  Text

April 13 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Daniel 3:19-27, Isaiah 43:2

The Lord protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, reminding them and their enemies of his powerful love and care. Other examples: Paul’s escapes from threats, Noah’s ark.

The Lord Cares   MP3  WMA  Text

April 20 – Pastor Steven Pagels

Luke 7:11-15

Jesus performed miracles for a few reasons, one of them was that he just plain cared about people. His compassion never fails. Other examples: feeding the 5,000.

The Lord Directs   MP3  WMA  Text

April 27 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

Esther 4:12-14

“For such a time as this” the Lord did direct the affairs of world powers and a Godly woman to intersect so that he could be glorified providing deliverance to his people. The Lord directs the affairs of our world and our lives today to be a blessing for us. Other examples: Joseph. Cf also Acts 17:26,27.

He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands   MP3  WMA  Text

May 4 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Job 12:7-10

God cares for his creation. All of nature is under his loving providence as a gift to us and as glory to his name. Focus: all of God’s creatures. Cf also Psalm 104.

He Takes Care of Everyone   MP3  WMA  Text

May 11 – Pastor Rolfe Westendorf

Matthew 5:45

The Lord made people and takes care of people. All people. Even the wicked and those who don’t go to church. Examples: God’s appointment of governments and institution of the family as a blessing to society. Cf also Acts 14:17.

He Works for the Good of All Believers   MP3  WMA  Text

May 18 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Romans 8:28

The ultimate focus of the Lord and his love is the Church. He not only provides for believers everything he provides for everyone, but provides special care in the angels and in arranging for bad to turn into good.

Colossians: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ

A Message from the Master sermon series on the book of Colossians

February 10 – March 30, 2008

Colossians is one of the most Christ-centered books in the Bible. There we witness that Jesus Christ is supreme over all things and is sufficient in everything. The Gnostic heresy similar to new age thinking is combated by Paul’s inspired Christology and the Church is built up in faith. Baptized believers united with Christ in his death, resurrection, and exaltation find here their foundation for Christian living.

An Introduction to Colossians   MP3  WMA  Text

February 10 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Colossians 1:1-14

The apostle Paul’s greeting to, thanksgiving for, and prayer on behalf of the Colossian Christians sets the stage for this Christ-centered book.

Christ is Supreme and Sufficient in Creation   MP3  WMA  Text

February 17 – Rolfe Westendorf

Colossians 1:15-17

“All things were created by him and for him.” Compare the role of Christ in creation to that of the Father, and celebrate the completeness of the universe finding its fulfillment in Christ.

Christ is Supreme and Sufficient in Redemption   MP3  WMA  Text

February 24 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

Colossians 1:18-23

God made peace with sinners “through his blood shed on the cross.” Christ, the head of the Church, his body, reconciles people to God and presents us holy in his sight.

Christ is Supreme and Sufficient in Sanctification   MP3  WMA  Text

March 2 – Pastor Steven Pagels

Colossians 1:24-2:12

The Christ-centered exhortation of the apostle urges Christians, “continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith.” There is nothing lacking in our behavior that is based on Christ.

Christ: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of the Law   MP3  WMA  Text

March 9 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Colossians 2:13-23

Believers are made alive with Christ, forgiven from the law’s curse and free from the law’s control. We belong to him and not the world, growing in faith to distinguish between divine and human commands.

Christ: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Sin   MP3  WMA  Text

March 16 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Colossians 3:1-14

Christ clothes believers with his compassion and love, putting our sinful nature to death and raising us to a new life.

The Supreme and Sufficient Christ Rules Our Behavior   MP3  WMA  Text

March 23 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Colossians 3:15-4:1

Jesus reigns over death and the devil. He is alive and his word dwells in us to produce peace, thanksgiving, wisdom, and joy. We perform our earthly tasks and roles as children of the resurrection, “in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

The Supreme and Sufficient Christ Opens Doors for Ministry   MP3  WMA  Text

March 30 – Rolfe Westendorf

Colossians 4:2-18

As “fellow workers for the kingdom of God” believers proclaim the mystery of Christ as we “make the most of every opportunity.” Paul’s fellow servants provide encouraging examples of ministry.

Little Psalms for Big Problems

A Message from the Master sermon series full of hope for today’s troubles

December 2, 2007 – February 3, 2008

God has a way of tackling big problems with seemingly small solutions. He crushed the walls of Jericho with the sound of trumpets, exponentially downsized Gideon’s army before victory, sent the world’s Savior as a helpless infant, and created the vast array of stars with a single command. Size doesn’t matter to God, but he knows it matters to us so he often solves super-sized problems with small-sized responses. He wants us to trust in his mighty and merciful ways instead of boasting in our greatness. In this series you’ll hear some little Psalms provide God’s answers to some big problems.

World Conflict – God Reigns  MP3  WMA  Text

December 2 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Psalm 47

One problem literally as large as the world is world unrest. Wars and strife destroy the harmony of our planet. Terrorism threatens every corner of the world. But “the kings of the earth belong to God.”

Overwhelmed – A Quiet Soul  MP3  WMA  Text

December 9 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Psalm 131

We are so concerned about “great matters” that we find ourselves overextended in life. Our calendars are packed, our action item lists are long, and our responsibilities are great. God’s small solution offers big help. And it’s not hard to find.

Enemy Attack – Come Quickly, O Lord  MP3  WMA  Text

December 16 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Psalm 70

When surrounded by enemies who stalk and scorn us all day long we turn to the Lord. “Come quickly to help me!” His curse on our enemies is a blessing to us.

Commercialism – The King of Christmas  MP3  WMA  Text

December 23 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

Psalm 2

TV commercials convince us that problems take 30 or 60 seconds to solve. Capitalism promotes competition for the mighty dollar that extorts the holy season of Christmas, robbing it of its true meaning. The problem isn’t either of these but the focus of our faith. This Psalm helps us see the baby Jesus as more than a mere mortal child. He is the eternal Son of God and King of all. “Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”

Prosperity – Blessed Are All Who Fear the Lord  MP3  WMA  Text

December 30 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Psalm 128

Will the new year be better than the old? We strive for improvement and push ourselves to be successful. What, truly, is success? This little Psalm defines it in terms that have less to do with talent and more to do with a heart that “fears the Lord.”

Local Limitations – A Global Mission  MP3  WMA  Text

January 6 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Psalm 67

We have enough of our own problems to keep us occupied in our personal place in the world. On this day of Epiphany a short but energetic Psalm opens our eyes to see God’s “salvation among the nations.” More than that, to reach out to all peoples of the earth.

Fickle Love – Faithful Lord    MP3  WMA  Text

January 13 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Psalm 117

The shortest chapter of the Bible (which also happens to be the exact middle chapter of the Bible) says it all: “the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever … great is his love toward us.” Compared to the self-centered and easily distracted love of people who can let us down, the faithful love of the Lord is ours to cherish, and praise, forever.

Prejudice – Together in the Lord    MP3  WMA  Text

January 20 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

Psalm 133

Hate crimes, ethnic strife, terrorism, and racially motivated segregation destroy us at home and far away. “Good and pleasant” relationships with other people happen when they are based on blessings from above. Harmony comes from faith and love.

Depressed – Put Your Hope in God    MP3  WMA  Text

January 27 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Psalm 43

It’s bad when the hopelessness and despair of circumstances leaves you so disturbed that you wonder, “Where is God?” The Psalm writer doesn’t take long to answer his own downcast soul and provide relief for us all: “you are God, my stronghold … my Savior.”

Uncertainty – My Help Comes from the Lord    MP3  WMA  Text

February 3 – Rolfe Westendorf

Psalm 121

Good help is hard to find. And when we do find it, can we trust it is the kind of help we need? The insecurity of not being sure about the right answers can makes us chase around for something stable. “The Lord will keep you from all harm.”

What Does It Mean to Be Lutheran?

A Message from the Master sermon series on the Lutheran Confessions

October 21 – November 25, 2007

Series Overview: PDF

As a sequel to the previous sermon series on the Holy Christian Church, Message from the Master presents “What Does It Mean to Be Lutheran?” a sermon series on the Lutheran confessions. Lutheran pastors and confirmands make solemn promises to uphold the truths contained in the Lutheran confessions. But, what exactly are they? Where did they come from? What do they say? Join our Message from the Master preachers on a tour of these Lutheran documents. Witness their origins. Peer into their contents. Affirm your faith. And be emboldened to take your stand on these solid summaries of the Holy Scriptures, all gathered into volume we call, “The Book of Concord.”

The Ecumenical Creeds  MP3  WMA  Text

October 21 – Rolfe Westendorf

Matthew 28:18-20, John 5:22-23, 1 Peter 3:15

Lutherans are Christians. We believe in the Trinity, and in the God Man – Jesus Christ. We are better prepared to share with others what we believe if we are familiar with some outlines of Scriptural truth, like those found in creeds and confessions.(back to top)

The Smalcald Articles  MP3  WMA  Text

October 28 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Galatians 5:1-6,13; Colossians 2:6-8,16-23; Romans 14:19-23

Lutherans practice Christian freedom. The joy of the gospel shines brightly when we don’t burden consciences with man-made rules. A concern of the confessors, as stated repeatedly in the Smalcald Articles, was the burden created by some man-made practices. Their call for gospel freedom is an example for Christians and churches today. (back to top)

The Augsburg Confession and Apology to the Augsburg Confession  MP3  WMA  Text

November 4 – Pastor Daron Lindeman

Romans 3:19-28

Lutherans believe that justification is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. This doctrine permeates the Augsburg Confession as it does our living and believing. On this Reformation Sunday the epistle lesson for the day provides a fitting connection with the story and document of the Augsburg confessors. (back to top)

Luther’s Small and Large Catechisms   MP3  WMA  Text

November 11 – Pastor Rolfe Westendorf

Deuteronomy 4:9, Psalm 119, Proverbs 22:6, 2 Timothy 3:14-16

Lutherans are lifelong learners, and we regularly open our ears and hearts to the Word of God. We take special care to instruct our children in Christian education at home and school. (back to top)

Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope     MP3  WMA  Text

November 18 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Matthew 16:13-20, John 20:23, 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Lutherans believe in the ministry of the keys, which is the true authority of the church. We express it in both the public ministry of the gospel, and the universal priesthood of all believers. The authority of the church is found in no individual(s) except Jesus Christ himself.

The Formula of Concord     MP3  WMA  Text

November 25 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

1 Timothy 1:19, 4:6-16, 6:3-5,11-16,20-21; 2 Timothy 1:6-14, 2:2,14, 4:2-5

Lutherans are confessional. What does it mean to be confessional? What role do apologetics play in relation to other Christians? Is there such a thing as absolute truth? Is it a matter of us being right and everyone else wrong? This series finale will conclude with encouragement from the Scriptures to stand firm in the faith and share it boldly with others.

I Believe in the Holy Christian Church

A Message from the Master sermon series on the one, true Church

September 2, – October 14, 2007  +   7 Sundays

Your friend asks why there are so many churches and why they can’t get along. The pope declares that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true church. Some churches offer contemporary worship while others remain traditional. Synods debate with each other and even among themselves. Some churches flourish while others fade. What do we know for sure about churches, synods, and the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints? Join us for “I Believe in the Holy Christian Church,” a series of Biblical instruction and encouragement that explores names for the Church and what that means for believers today.

The Holy Christian Church  MP3  WMA  Text

September 2 – Professor Forrest Bivens

Ephesians 4:4-6; 1 Peter 2:9,10; 2 Timothy 2:19; Acts 8:1-4

The invisible Church will never perish, and includes all believers, even as we form visible churches to proclaim the gospel … sometimes during less than ideal circumstances.

Sheep of Our Good Shepherd  MP3  WMA  Text

September 9 – Pastor Jeremy Mattek

Acts 20:28, Psalm 100:3; John 10:1-18; Psalm 23; Luke 15:1-7

Romans 12:4,5; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 1:22,23; 4:11-13; Colossians 1:18

God’s Field    MP3  WMA  Text

September 23 –

September 30 – Pastor Rolfe Westendorf

Isaiah 62:1-6; Revelation 19:6-8; Ephesians 5:22-33

October 7 – Pastor Wayne Mueller

Revelation 3:12; 21:2,10; Isaiah 41:8-14; Romans 11

Through faith like that of Abraham all believers are his spiritual descendants. The Lord protects and prospers the Church today like he showed his love to the ancient Hebrews.

God’s Temple    MP3  WMA  Text

October 14 – Forrest Bivens

Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 Corinthians 3:16,17; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 1 Peter 2:4,5

It’s a special place and all believers are a special people, appointed and decorated to be set apart from the rest of the world. God himself lives in us, giving our faith a firm foundation and our works of faith excellence and praise.

Ancient Messengers, Modern Message

A Message from the Master sermon series on the minor prophets

June 10 - August 26, 2007

These men of God did not write a single e-mail, research the internet for source material, or appear on the talk show circuit to promote their books. They bear the title “minor prophets” as if what they have to say is less significant, but don’t miss the critical role these men played in God’s plan of salvation … and the contemporary relevance of the message they shared. They lived during national unrest and church crisis, they challenged the lapsing morals of their neighbors and friends, they risked personal peril to pull people away from the appeal of false religions that satisfy carnal appetites alone, and they expanded the vision of God’s kingdom with mission efforts to the Gentiles. The only thing lacking in the books of the Bible that bear their names is length, and what these little gems lack in volume they make up for in concise, dramatic, eloquent, and poignantly Messianic messages. Tune into this series for promise, guidance, and straight talk from ancient messengers of God with a modern message for the world outside your window and inside your heart.

One God, Three Persons, Many Blessings

A Message from the Master sermon series on the triune God

April 15 - June 3, 2007

The doctrine of the Trinity is a teaching of Scripture that we cannot comprehend with our reason. Bible-believing Christians of considerable intelligence have had trouble over the years portraying the triune God with the proper concepts and language. Ancient anti-trinitarian errors are being replayed in religions throughout the world today. In the midst of it all, we believe in one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This God is described in the Scriptures best of all when he is at his work of salvation, conveying blessings on people he loves. In this series we recount the wonderful works of the Trinity and rejoice in the many blessings he brings.

Guarded by God’s Grace

A Message from the Master sermon series on the epistles of Peter

February 25 - April 1, 2007

Painful trouble in the Christian life can lead a person to grumble or to grow. By God’s grace we grow through the hardships of this world as promised in the Holy Scriptures. As a holy writer of God’s Word, a disciple of our Lord Jesus, and our partner and peer in faith-filled suffering, Peter offers a divine perspective of the Christian life for our meditation during the season of Lent.

Great are the Works of the Lord!

A Message from the Master sermon series on miracles

January 7 - February 18, 2007

The season of Epiphany pulls back the curtains on the life and ministry of Jesus to shine the spotlight on his divine nature. We know that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26) and so throughout the Scriptures the Lord God applies his almighty power to the hopeless situations of humanity. This series on miracles will encourage listeners to see in these great works of the Lord not just a spectacle of awe, but saving acts of love.
